Ciguapa soy del Cibao
Esta tierra de nosotros
Si con cuidado la amamos
Será esmeralda pa’ todos

Hija soy del huracán
Son mis venas los arroyos
Mis brazos son alas blancas
De las garzas cada otoño

Los españoles vinieron
A matar nuestros retoños
Pocos indios que quedaron
Vivieron sólo para el foso,
Pero mis taínos viven:
Sus almas son capas de oro
Adornan mi corazón
Es Quisqueya su tesoro.

The Song of the Ciguapa


I’m Ciguapa from the Cibao
This land of ours
If we love it with care
It’ll be an emerald for everyone

Daughter I’m of the hurricane
The creeks are my veins
My arms are the white wings
Of the egrets every fall

The Spaniards came
To kills my buds
The few Indians left
Only lived for the grave,
But my Taínos live:
Their souls have layers of gold
They adorn my heart
It’s Quisqueya their treasure

1) Quisqueya is the Indian name of Dominican Republic
2) Tainos were the original Indians in Dominican Republic

3) Ciguapa is a mythological creature that inhabited the forests. Her feet were backward
